“What’s Going On Down There?”

Anyone who has had a yeast infection will definitely commiserate that it is a very uncomfortable situation and that if you can avoid it, you must. However, unless you’ve had one before, you may not know what it even is, what the symptoms are, and how to avoid it in the future.

Is This a Yeast Infection?

Symptoms of a yeast infection can be very similar to sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis and so, it is always best to see your doctor as soon as possible to know what your next steps should be. Symptoms of a yeast infection include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Red irritation
  • Swelling of the vagina and vulva
  • Pain while peeing
  • Pain during sex
  • Thick, white, odorless discharge (consistency of cottage cheese)

Having a yeast infection is uncomfortable and as a result, we are sure you will be plenty motivated to come in and get checked. However, if you are still unsure, make an appointment today, so that you can not only have peace of mind, but also be well on your way to receiving the proper treatment and feeling yourself again.

What Causes a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection can be caused by a variety of circumstances and so, if you get a yeast infection, be mindful of anything out of the ordinary that you may have done — and avoid it! If you’re not sure what caused it, talk to your doctor. They can help you determine what happened and how to avoid it in the future. Causes of a yeast infection include:

  • Hormone changes
  • Diabetes
  • Antibiotics
  • Douches and vaginal sprays
  • Lotions, body washes, and bubble baths
  • Weak immune system
  • Sex

If you come in for an exam at our Houston practice and do indeed have a yeast infection, we will most likely offer you two treatment options. A cream that can be applied topically, or a pill that can be taken once and will usually do the trick.

How Do I Avoid a Yeast Infection?

If you’re suffering from a yeast infection, we are so sorry! It is very uncomfortable and thankfully you can do your part to avoid getting it again.

  • Eat more probiotics
  • Switch to an Estrogen-free birth control
  • Wear cotton underwear
  • Avoid scented feminine products
  • Clean your vagina often
  • Get more sleep
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet

Though getting a yeast infection can be uncomfortable, it can be a great way to re-evaluate your health and hygiene practices. Remember, taking care of your body can only be done if you make it a priority.
